About the Role

Located at Austin Health in Heidelberg, the research team led by Professor David Berlowitz focuses on investigating sleep and breathing dysfunction in neuromuscular diseases, particularly spinal cord injury and motor neuron disease/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Our research team has recently secured Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) funding for several multi-centre clinical trials investigating novel treatments and alternative care models aiming to improve health outcomes for people with neuromuscular diseases.

Under the supervision of Lead Implementation Scientist, Dr Marnie Graco and project and laboratory leader Professor David Berlowitz, you will  drive the execution of these mixed methods process evaluations alongside the main clinical trials.

Additionally, you will assist with protocol development, ethics applications, data collection, analysis and interpretation of data, preparation of publications, and presentations for scientific meetings.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Execute the mixed methods process evaluations of the MRFF funded clinical trials and other research projects as required.
  • Build an understanding of the key barriers to evidence-based management of sleep and breathing disorders in neuromuscular disease and develop strategies to optimise clinical care and outcomes.
  • Develop or maintain an independent research profile, including publications, presentations, and research grant funding applications, that supports and complements the local research team.

Who We Are Looking For

An agile, independent, and team-focused individual with strong analytical skills and a keen focus on outcomes. Strong communication skills, essential for working with  a diverse range of stakeholders, as well as demonstrating enthusiasm, motivation, and exceptional teamwork abilities to contribute effectively to an exciting research program.

You will also have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in allied health, nursing, science or similar, with post-graduate implementation science research experience.
  • Completion of a PhD or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience in the collection and analysis of qualitative data.
  • Demonstrated ability to theorise intervention outcomes e.g.  identify causal mechanisms of behaviour change.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
