About us

The post will be based at St Thomas’ Hospital in central London in the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences at King’s College London:?https://www.kcl.ac.uk/bmeis. There is a unique infrastructure within the School to support cutting-edge translational healthcare research, including a suite of clinical MRI scanners located inside a hospital environment (0.55T, 1.5T, 3T and 7T), state-of-the-art engineering and physics laboratories, high-performance computing, and industry collaboration through the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering.

About the role

We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join Dr Andrada Ianus’ Research Group at the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, King’s College London. You will join a dynamic multi-disciplinary team with access to cutting-edge imaging facilities and world-renowned expertise. You will work on an ERC Starting Grant funded project to deliver novel MRI approaches to image the liver and enable the detection of micrometastases in cancer patients.

The overarching aim of this project is to enable the detection and characterisation of liver micrometastases in cancer patients based on a novel MRI approach which combines multi-dimensional diffusion-relaxometry acquisitions, efficient data denoising and biophysical modelling of the tissue microstructure.

In this position, you will work on developing advanced MRI techniques and employing them in a longitudinal clinical study focused on the early detection of liver metastases in cancer patients. ?You will be responsible for the sequence implementation, data acquisition and analysis, both for healthy volunteers and?patients.

The work will be based at St Thomas’ Hospital. The applicant should have (or be in the final stages of completing) a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physics, Medical Imaging, or a related area. They should have good analytical and programming skills and experience with the acquisition and analysis of (clinical) MRI data, as well as with mathematical modelling, image processing methods and/or machine learning.

Experience of methods used for quantitative MRI and/or previous hand-on experience implementing MRI pulse sequences are a plus. Ideally, applicants will have a proven research track record through peer review publications and conference presentations. They will also have excellent communication, organisational and time management skills and a creative approach to problem solving, together with the ability to work constructively and effectively within the team.

This is a full-time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 3 years (with possibility of extension).

About you

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria?


	Hold a PhD (or near completion) in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physics, Medical Imaging or related discipline*?
	Good working knowledge of MRI theory, data acquisition and analysis
	Good working knowledge of mathematical modelling and machine learning methods
	Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals
	Proficiency in MATLAB, Python, or other relevant programming languages
	Self-motivated, ability to work independently?
	Ability to communicate well, critically assess research findings, to present at conferences and represent the team in meetings
	Willing and able to work in a team and conduct out-of-working hours data acquisitions when needed


*?Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade

	Relevant practical experience, ideally with projects involving clinical MRI data?
	Experience implementing MRI sequences on clinical scanners and/or knowledge of Pulseq
	Knowledge of human research ethical principles and methods
	Work experience in a multi-disciplinary environment?

Research Assistant (grade 6) on research project 'Neuroinclusive Research For All'

We are looking for a research assistant to join us on a participatory research project working with a neurodiverse group of people to explore 1) where we can make adaptations to ensure community partners have equitable access in the research process, and 2) co-develop guidance for researchers and community members working in neurodiverse partnerships to create sustainable practices for future research.

Responsibilities:


	To understand and convey information which needs careful explanation to the team or group of people through presentations, discussions and meetings which contribute to the production of research reports and publications.
	To write up results of research work, present information on research progress and outcomes to bodies supervising research in a clear and accurate manner.
	To analyse or undertake basic research by deciding how best to apply existing methodology according to overall context and objectives.
	To deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines by discussing with the Principal Investigator or Grant-holder and offering creative or innovative solutions.
	To liaise with research colleagues and make internal and external contacts to develop knowledge and understanding to form relationships for future research collaboration.
	To contribute to the planning of research projects.
	To assist in contributing to support student projects on the use of research methods and equipment.
	To contribute to fostering a collegial and respectful working environment which is inclusive and welcoming and where everyone is treated fairly with dignity and respect.
	To engage in wider citizenship to support the department and wider discipline.
	To engage in continuing professional development by attending relevant training and development courses.
	Any other specific responsibilities.


This post is fixed term for 3 months, the funding is available from early 2025 for this fixed period only; the project is time limited and will end on 30th June 2025.

The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

The Role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational Chemistry to work with Professor Paul Hodgkinson in the Department of Chemistry at Durham University, and in collaboration with Professor Stewart Clark in the Department of Physics.

The position is to commence in April 2025. It is a fixed-term post for 12 months.

The project involves mainly computational work to exploit GPUs using directive-based accelerator offloading in the CASTEP code. CASTEP is a leading software package for calculating the properties of materials from first principles using density functional theory. It enables the simulation of a wide range of material properties, including energetics, atomic-level structures, vibrational characteristics, and electronic responses. Notably, CASTEP offers extensive spectroscopic features that directly correlate with experimental techniques, such as NMR spectroscopy. A Sternheimer solver underpins the calculation of a variety of NMR properties and responses and its performance characteristics is the limiting factor in studying various spectroscopic phenomena, such as NMR chemical shifts. Offloading this to GPUs is the core work to be carried out by the PDRA.

The Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences (HaSS) is seeking to appoint a 12month fixed term Learning Technologist to work within the Faculty IT development team.

The successful applicant will primarily focus upon the creation of new, and conversion of existing courses to online learning. Working closely with academic colleagues you will have excellent communication and customer facing skills, producing high quality teaching material with particular focus upon online, blended and distance learning styles of delivery.

You will provide expert advice to enhance teaching, learning and assessment through the utilisation of learning technologies including Moodle VLE, and collaborative platforms such as Office365 (MS Teams), Zoom, YouTube live streaming for engaged group working, interactive learning and discussion forums.

The successful applicant will join a team of specialists who are responsible for delivering Faculty IT services and supporting academic colleagues in the use of technology. A flexible approach to work is required, with the team providing excellent customer service that may include occasional evening and weekend activity.
