The University of Guanajuato was established in 1732 and is based in the Mexican state of Guanajuato with a motto of "the truth shall make you free". The university¡¯s mission is to increase, preserve and share all knowledge aimed towards the upright development of the human being, through the preservation of its environment and the construction of a democratic, just and free society.
The university traces its history back to the educational institute called the Hospice of the Holy Trinity, which was established in 1732. On 29th August 1827, upon the signing of the first constitutional government, the school changed its name to the College of the Immaculate Conception and fell under government responsibility. Programmes founded around this time included mining, law, painting, sculpture and architecture. In 1831, a library was established.
The name of the college changed again in 1867, this time to the National College of Guanajuato. During the following decade, technical programmes at the school grew rapidly, as did research. Finally, in 1945, the college changed its name to the University of Guanajuato, and the school was granted autonomy by the state legislature beginning May 1994.
The university is a large public institution that offers high school degrees and university education to about 33,828 students. Over 17,000 of those are pursuing undergraduate, masters, and doctorate degrees. The university offers 153 academic programmes, including 13 doctorate, 39 masters programmes, and 65 bachelor's degrees.
The university offers bachelor degrees in arts, agricultural sciences, health sciences, economic-administrative sciences, natural and exact sciences, social sciences and humanities and engineering. To offer such a diversity of programmes, the university has schools in 14 cities throughout the state of Guanajuato.
To achieve the university¡¯s vision of offering degrees from high school to doctorate, university management has managed to secure collaboration agreements with several prominent universities in Canada, USA, Japan, Russia, Malaysia, South Korea, Bulgaria, Spain, France, Norway, Romania and Netherlands in addition to other universities in Mexico and Latin America.
