I see that a University of Cambridge study has concluded that formal dining in the academy not only educates people on how to pass the port but is also central to the maintenance of the class system ("Hall of mirrors: do college dinners circulate class along with the port?", 5 May).
In many years of association with academia, I have had the odd glass or two of port, but I remain a lifelong member of the Campaign for Real Ale. The beer is good, but the statement about class politics even more important.
