Discredited proposals are often rehashed in late August when it is hoped they may avoid adverse comment. Not only do we have the proposal to remove a proper train service between London and the Northwest for months, but we have the "dare-to-be-different" idea that Welsh children should be subjected to a scheme ("Welsh bac idea sparks interest", THES , August 30) that major research universities will not recognise.
The only "interest" the Welsh bac will generate in Whitehall is in checking whether all such socially and politically suicidal experiments can be devolved safely to our newly devolved assembly.
