Although it is true that many "student leaders at Russell Group universities have threatened to boycott the national student satisfaction survey" ("Student threat to boycott survey", January ), King's College London Students' Union will be co-operating with it.

We have been in dialogue with King's College for some months about the survey working to ensure that students are informed early on that completing the survey is in their interest. In this way they will be able to avoid the intrusiveness of telephone calls.

We believe the survey is of benefit to students as its aim is to determine how satisfied they are with their institution, and to use the information to improve the situation for all students - the raison d'etre of students' unions, surely?

Andy Wilson is quoted as saying that the internal study conducted at Southampton University means that a national survey won't help the students there. We believe that a national survey is necessary to make an objective comparison of institutions across the country, aiding students in their selection. It also enables the student voice to be aired nationally, holding universities publicly to account for the quality of the education they offer.
