There is a crucial difference between the redundancies planned at Northumbria University and those at London South Bank University ("Natfhe poised to take action", March 31). The 20 academic job cuts at the latter will be compulsory. To lose some of your staff may be regarded as a misfortune: it damages morale, the reputation of the institution and the student experience. To lose them by compulsory redundancy looks like carelessness.
