I am disturbed by your report that a target-focused education means that undergraduates struggle in many cases to learn without direct guidance from tutors ("To spoon-feed is not to nurture", 24 November). One lives in hope that the momentous events of 2011, for example the Occupy movement, will rekindle the independence of earlier decades. When I was a student, the last place I expected to learn anything was the lecture hall.
