Do we need teaching diplomas? 2

You correctly identify some of the difficulties facing lecturers undertaking teacher-training courses ("Lecturers bored by lessons in teaching", April 22).

For junior lecturers, the twin demands of teaching and the necessity of establishing a publication profile mean that training is marginalised - there simply isn't the time to give the course due attention. Timetabling is also an issue, with training modules frequently clashing with important departmental meetings and research seminars. For junior and temporary members of staff hoping to raise or indeed establish a departmental profile, attendance at and participation in such events is crucial. I also find a gap between the training offered and my day-to-day experience as a lecturer. The key issues of timing and relevance need to be addressed before junior lecturers can fully commit to teacher-training courses.
