I once read a (possibly apocryphal) story that a scholar who believed that Sir Francis Bacon had written the works of Shakespeare once tried to convince the critic Cyril Connolly that the son of a lowly Stratford grocer could never have written the Bard's corpus.
Connolly, who was no great fan of Shakespeare, is said to have muttered: "On the contrary, they are exactly the sort of plays a grocer would write!"
