Driven mad by market

Talk about ivory (and Fawlty) towers. "Got a space to think but no space for your car?" (February 10) doesn't name the planet all those academics in denial over global meltdown or else preaching ecology yet not practising it come from. And what a flat-tyre of a message on ideology we got from the replies (Letters, February 17).

We have a clash of civilisations between freedom as the market fetishism to do as one likes (and to hell with the consequences), and freedom as the red-green responsibility and imperative to do what one ought and could to have the freedom of a sustainable, viable world.

Our London college plans to sell off its grand old building so it can be developed into luxury flats in an area choking in such vanities. In the car park it proposes to erect a cramped glass stump with minimal parking, save for the elite. Hard cheese then for part-timers. Public transport for many of us takes much of the day before we start to get paid.

The advice of economists and accountants should go in the bin. Education is about minds. Its domination by the market is its undoing.
