Ethical position

The purpose of my speech to the Higher Education Forum was to emphasise how all sector organisations - universities, students' unions and oversight bodies - can learn from difficult cases ("More help for depression, less help for despots: OIA", News, 1 November). This is exactly what happened in the case of the Woolf inquiry into the London School of Economics' links with Libya. From the lessons set out in the Woolf report, the LSE developed a new ethics code and ethical guidelines that were published in June 2012. These documents are exemplary, and the sector should seek to learn from and emulate them.
