I enjoyed the article by Amanda Goodall on the leadership of our universities (Turning on the leading lights", January), and I very much enjoyed her book on this subject.
I acknowledge many of the arguments. But as a female academic appointed to the position of vice-chancellor from within my own university as part of a recruitment process led by an independent search agency, I feel the need to note that there are some exceptions to the concerns she raised.
