As one of the academics made redundant by the University of Luton last year and a signatory to the letter mentioned in the article on Luton, I have a simple question for the its management team. How can Luton, having axed six departments - including politics, history, literature, geography and science - continue to call itself a university? Provision of a range of services to local employers may be fine, and if Luton wishes to rebadge itself as "Gradgrind College plc", we might applaud it for its honesty, but to continue to claim to be a university is a bit much.
