Fred Pearce's review of Vandana Shiva's Tomorrow's Diversity and Norman Moss's Managing the Planet (Books, THES, March 2) seemed to be little more than a Baconian reinforcement. Applauding Moss's ludicrous assertion that we are apart from nature, Pearce suggests that "by taming nature, we may find a way to live with her (sic)". Cringe-making stuff. Shiva, who is "ultimately crackers" and "emotional", will have to be tamed in the process, no doubt.
