So John Randall thinks that "almost all of this derided administration would occur anyway" (Soapbox, THES , August 24). He is right. But since his organisation insists that the information and data must be reformatted, differently presented and rewritten for its subject reviewers, it is a spurious argument.

Having inspected for the Further Education Funding Council, Ofsted and the Adult Learning Inspectorate, and having endured a subject review this year, I was horrified by the blizzard of paper the QAA demanded. If schools were subject to such a regime there would be an outcry.
