In my speech to the University and College Union's congress, I proposed that the UCU spend more on supporting members and branches and less on internal committees and bureaucracy. I am at a loss to see how this proposal could be construed as an attack on anyone rather than an attempt to equip the union for the great challenges we face by placing resources where they are needed most ("Sally, united we stand: you know the rest", Letters, 9 June).
I also made it clear that I want to debate the future of the union and encourage as many members as possible to get involved. I would invite anyone who would like to join that debate to start by reading my congress speech at the link below.
