In reviewing The Character of Cats (Books, THES , August 1), Andrew Kitchener claims that "burying of faeces is a clever ploy to ingratiate cats to us". Much depends on how you define us and your personal naivety over where the burying is actually taking place.
This feline activity could just as easily be interpreted as analogous to a crude attempt to hide the smoking gun.
Frankly, cats could develop the ability to safely bury the entire toxic output of the nuclear industry - but they would still not gain house room chez nous .
But, hey, if one of them could learn to bowl a decent off-cutter...
