Contrary to the assertion that little research has been carried out on open-plan offices, there is a body of literature showing that in a variety of organisations they are seen to enhance individual satisfaction and perceived productivity, as well as reducing unnecessary energy consumption.

Among the variables associated with positive rather than negative outcomes are the intention of the organisation in making the change (to make not save money); the design process (engage the users); the design itself (high partitions may be the worst compromise); the local management style; the way the office is serviced; and the overall organisational climate.

A fuller review and database are being prepared.
