I know that conspiracy theories are great fun, including Martin Taylor's (Letters, December 23/30). Better still, they are a distraction from the real argument, which in this case is the Royal Society's wilful conflation of open-access publishing with institutional repositories. Or is the commercial tail of the Royal Society blinding it to scientific rigour? Confusing open-access publishing with mandated deposit in institutional repositories is about as sensible as confusing the Royal Society with the Flat Earth Society.
