Ross Anderson's arithmetic (Letters, December 8) on possible voting in a future Cambridge Council is, of course, correct. But is it not bizarre to suppose that a heterogeneous group of the membership made up of four external members, four heads of college and three students would be inclined to vote in one direction on some contentious issue? Perhaps not so bizarre as to imagine 12 academic staff all so much of one mind as to vote in unison in the opposite direction.

Member, Cambridge Council, 1967-75 and 1995-2000
