As a university administrator, I have great sympathy for the financial problems of today's students. But the trend of canvassing alumni for funds is worrying and counterproductive.
My former university has contacted me by phone and by mail for money. When I politely informed them I could not help, I received another letter explaining how so many alumni could help and asking me to think again.
Other friends have had similar experiences. I find this not only a sad reflection on today's university system but also an unwise move. Such pestering is making me consider removing my name from alumni association lists, and I am not alone in this reaction. Universities should think twice about begging for money in this way.
