It is time for the government to be more bold about university fees. British students who have benefited from private education should perhaps be charged non-European Union fee rates. In some of these cases, perhaps many, such students have bought competitive advantage at the expense of poorer yet able students whose parents could not afford school fees.

Charging the privately educated higher fees would seem to be fairer and might even facilitate the sector's expansion.
