Alan Sinfield hits out at the "self-appointing Council for College and University English" ("Reader, you are not welcome", THES , February 14). CCUE membership is open to all UK English departments and 80 to 90 per cent join. Its executive is elected by that membership. When asked to advise on the composition of, say, a benchmark group, the executive consults member departments. Sinfield is welcome to join in the process and to seek election to the executive. I'm sure he would get some support for his views.
