Shadow Aviation and Shipping Minister Julian Brazier worries that some graduates "settle into jobs for which a university degree has little value" (News, March 17). Does he not realise that people lead lives outside of work that might equally benefit from a better understanding of the wider physical, social and political world?

Any university degree should teach critical thinking skills.

Perhaps Brazier's real concern is that a plumber or bus driver with a degree might see through the shallow thinking of politicians who regard their fellow humans as no more than units of production and cast his or her vote accordingly.
