Academics do not always have a choice about using private transport to do their jobs (Letters, THES, July 25). Their work is not always campus or home-based.
Tutors working with initial teacher trainees, for example, have to travel to schools many miles away to observe them. Trains and/or buses rarely offer the relevant routes.
Other academics travel to clients' locations where guaranteed parking space is an automatic courtesy.
To return to campus halfway through a day when one has been generating income for one's institution and not find a space near to the office is infuriating. The ensuing search is a waste of working time.
