In response to your story "UCU joins call for boycott of immigration regulations" (26 March), the Government has always welcomed genuine international students and the economic and cultural contributions they make. This is why we have fought to keep visa fee increases to a minimum, and they have not risen in two years. The cost is all-inclusive and a good deal when compared with countries where students pay extra fees to work.

Contrary to a number of reports, the fee for a student visa has increased by just ?46, adding 0.17 per cent to the cost of studying for a three-year degree. This figure includes ?20, not ?50, towards the new Migration Impact Fund aimed at reducing the effect of migration on local communities. This is a smaller amount than other groups will pay and is far outweighed by the many benefits of living and studying in the UK with its highly regarded educational system and qualifications.
