Vocational support

Geoff Smith asks about the difference between a salary and a stipend (Letters, 24 February). It is subtle but significant. A salary is payment for work done, whereas a stipend is payment to support postholders so as to enable them to do their work. Thus, in principle, the former envisages academic work as an economic transaction, the latter as a vocation.
