Lakatos Award 1994 Michael Dummett, emeritus professor of logic, University of Oxford, has been awarded the Lakatos Award for his book Frege: Philosophy of Mathematics, by the London School of Economics. He will visit the LSE to deliver a lecture and to receive the award on January 26 1995.

African Studies Association of the United Kingdom The association's inaugural prize, awarded for the best dissertation on an African topic submitted in 1992/1993, has been shared between Stephen Devereux (University of Oxford) and Caroline Orwin (School of African and Oriental Studies, University of London). Three other dissertations were specially commended, those by Josceyln Alexander (University of Oxford), Maia Green (London School of Economic and Political Sciences, University of London) and Joseph Muzulu (Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex).

Robert Blair Fellowship Iwona Beech, reader in applied environmental microbiology at the school of chemistry, physics and radiography at the University of Portsmouth has been awarded the 1994 Robert Blair fellowship for underwater study, by the Corporation of London.

Belvedere International Singing Competition Soprano Louise Walsh, who completed her postgraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in 1993, was recently declared the winner of the media first prize in this year's Belvedere International Singing Competition. She is the first British-taught winner.

The Textile Institute Marjorie Catlow, a former lecturer in the department of textiles at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology, and Michael Holmes, formerly vice principal of Hong Kong Technical College have received honorary life membership of the Textile Institute.
