Euro network crisis

A shake-up in Europe's academic networking organisation has followed the resignation of its president and executive committee, writes Helena Flusfeder.

Dissatisfaction among members with the way the Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association was being managed came to a head at the JENC6 conference (Joint European Networking Conference) in Tel Aviv.

At TERENA's general assembly, members of the executive committee and the president resigned and a new executive was elected.

Discontent was fuelled by the release of a business plan by the executive based on a membership income level which senior staff felt was unrealistically low.

It included a proposal to reduce staff by merging the functions of secretary general and executive officer, which senior staff felt was not workable.

Stefano Trumpy of Italy, who was elected new president, said that he was confident of the capabilities of the executive to build the image of TERENA and to generate trust .
