New Materials and Integrated Applications
The Macao Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (hereafter referred to as MIMSE) was founded in January 2021, under the leadership of Prof. Shuit-Tong Lee, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World.
The MIMSE will act in alignment with the Greater Bay Area Strategic Development Outline of the Macao SAR Government and the Science and Research Development Plan of Macau University of Science and Technology. It will make proactive efforts to integrate into the emerging synergetic innovation of the Greater Bay Area, consolidate the University’s science and research foundations in the area of materials science and engineering, and strive to build up a storage tank for talents and intellectual resources. The MIMSE aims to foster outstanding innovation-oriented top talents with international outlooks, independent thinking abilities, and inter-disciplinary advantages, including academic and applied talents with innovation abilities in scientific research and technologies, to provide M.U.S.T. with new impetuses for high-quality scientific research and continuous disciplinary innovations, to provide Macao’s materials science community with innovative driving forces, and to bring new vitality to the local economy.
The MIMSE is oriented toward areas such as artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, biomedicine, and comprehensive health, regarding advanced functional materials as its core. It prioritizes cross-disciplinary innovation initiatives such as information display, organic optoelectronics, flexible electronics, wearable intelligent sensors, biomedical materials, nano-catalysis and energy materials, functional surfaces and interfaces, and materials genome, and hopes to produce its own manufacture for the academic communities at home and abroad.
With the development of science and technology, the materials industry has permeated into various areas of the national economy, national defense infrastructure, and social life. It is the foundation on top of which high and emerging technology industries grow, and therefore it plays a tremendous role in the development of the national economy. China is the largest body of emerging economies across the world, and as part of the Belt & Road initiative, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area takes the unique geographical advantages of the coastal cities to serve as a waypoint for emerging industries. Materials science is at an evolutionary stage and can benefit from the conditions provided by the Greater Bay Area innovation and technology hub to enter a globally competitive market. The national Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area made a special remark to elevate the supporting and guiding role of the Greater Bay Area in the national development of the economy, and in supporting Macao integration into the greater picture of national development to sustain its long-term prosperity and stability. In the wake of the great historic opportunities afforded by the construction of the Greater Bay Area city clusters, it is of greater historic significance and value for Macao to invest in science and technology innovations and advance the materials industry economy.
