Fool’s gold

十一月 3, 2016

Gun. Foot. Fire. Only in an Olympic year could someone come up with the bizarre proposal to simplify attempts to measure the quality of university teaching into gold, silver and bronze and, at the same time, switch from a descriptor that classified eight-tenths of provision as “outstanding” or “excellent” to a descriptor that defines eight-tenths of provision as “sub-prime” and not meeting “the gold standard” (“England’s universities to have medal-style ratings for teaching”, News, 29 September). Our international competitors must be quaking, but doubtless not from fear.

John Cater
Vice-chancellor
Edge Hill University
