Selective hearing

十二月 24, 2015

Perhaps it would be more accurate for the article on highly selective universities lowering their entry standards to point out that so-called “elite universities” are no longer quite so elite (“Elite universities lower entry standards to expand, report reveals”, 17 December)? It’s rather depressing to read Mary Curnock Cook, Ucas’ chief executive, encouraging students to apply to more “ambitious” universities that she somehow sees as more “selective”, when the evidence of the Ucas report is quite clear: these universities are no longer so selective. Perhaps she might encourage students to be more “ambitious” by choosing a university based on the quality and satisfaction of the education offered and not just by reputation? Ucas is here to represent (and is funded by) all universities, not just the self-appointed elite of the Russell Group.
