Celebration of a brave, sane voice

The death of Senator William Fulbright has prompted a number of richly deserved tributes. At least two points should be underlined: First, for the education community, he will long be remembered as a voice of sanity in a world of confusion. He was one of the few to speak out against Senator McCarthy when hardly anyone dared raise their heads above the parapet.

Second, his creation of the Fulbright Scholarships nearly 50 years ago was a landmark. Students, staff and institutions worldwide continue to benefit from his vision and forethought. He could not have a better-looking memorial. I trust many fellow Fulbright Scholars and well-wishers will consider coming together for a celebration of an exceptional life.
