No Welsh institution would be complete unless there were competing views of how it came to be founded - there appear to be almost as many different explanations of where and how the Welsh Rugby Union came into being as there of the national XV's current ineptitude - and Llafur, the Welsh Labour History society is showing that it can reflect national tendencies as well as record them. There is general agreement that it was founded in a pub in Swansea, but exactly which one and when is more controversial.
Believing that the most likely date was 1970, Llafur plans a 25th anniversary dinner (or if 1970 proves not to be correct a "15th anniversary of the 10th anniversary dinner) later this year, and at the same time hopes to clarify the mystery. The circular to members inviting them to register interest in the dinner also asks them to state "I know/ I know not when Llafur was founded (in not more than 25 words)".
