Elections expert David Butler's dictum that "experts are no more likely to make accurate predictions, they just get them wrong for more sophisticated reasons" works just as well on the other side of the Atlantic. Harvard professor Sidney Verba's presidential address to the American Political Studies Association in Chicago was preceded by the reminder that back in the 1970s he predicted that presidential aspirant Ronald Reagan could not possibly put together a voting coalition broad enough to win.
