(Photograph) - Abreast of developments: Radiologists could find it easier to detect early breast cancer using a machine called SuperCOSMOS, which was designed and built at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh to digitise and analyse pictures of the night sky.
Now scientists hope to digitise X-ray mammograms and use "computer vision" to search for abnormalities in X-rays taken by the UK mass screening project. The project, Prompting Radiologists using an Image System for Mammograms (Prism), will cost Pounds 1.3 million, and will also involve experts from Glasgow, Edinburgh's department of computer science and Manchester's Wolfson Image Analysis Unit. 100 years of X-rays, page 21.
