On 19 March in Brussels, European Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin will meet about 200 representatives from the field of cardiovascular research. This will include scientists and representatives from academia, industry, public administration, patient organisations, private foundations, European institutions and the media. They will discuss the challenges for cardiovascular disease (CVD) research over the next ten years, how to better organise and co-ordinate this research at the European level and how to raise awareness for the continuing needs in cardiovascular research.

Cardiovascular disease remains by far the leading cause of death in Europe, accounting for more than 40 % of all deaths. This is despite significant progress in disease prevention and treatment. Many challenges remain for the management of cardiovascular disease, in particular the ageing European population and general lifestyle issues. For example, cardiovascular health in women has improved less than in men because of the rate of smoking among women has increased. Improved survival rates for heart attack victims have also driven up figures for cardiovascular disease, with such patients often later developing chronic heart conditions such as congestive heart failure.

European research must address these challenges if further progress is to be made. The conference will contribute this process by providing a forum for discussion on research and infrastructure needs in cardiovascular research. It will also discuss how young researchers can be better supported and how the co-ordination of cardiovascular research in Europe can be improved.

Expert workshops on future and on-going developments, the need for infrastructure and the role of young scientists in cardiovascular research will take place in the lead up to the conference. Results from these workshops will be presented and discussed at the conference.
