SUNDERLAND

When Jim Smith steps down from his Department of Health post as chief pharmaceutical officer in August, he will take up a full-time chair at Sunderland University's School of Health, Natural and Social Sciences.

Dr Smith will become professor of pharmacy practice and policy. He has been a visiting professor at the university, where he began his career as a research student, since his Government appointment in 2001.

He has worked previously at neighbouring Newcastle University and in industry, in addition to serving as an adviser to the National Health Service.

One of his key interests is ensuring that pharmacy is an integral part of the NHS in terms of providing high-quality services, access and choice for all patients, wherever they live and wherever they are treated.
