Making something scarce leads to increased desirability (“Stall and decline”, Opinions, 6 April). If UK institutions raise standards for entry, they will become more desirable, and, once they adjust for the smaller potential entry pool, they will be filled to that new capacity in a relatively stable way. If numbers decline because of economic or other conditions, raise entry standards again. Students and employers will catch on that only the best and brightest can attend, and that will cause those best and brightest students to choose that university over lesser competitors with lower standards.
