Sir Thomas Gresham – who is mentioned in the review of?London’s Triumph: Merchant Adventurers and the Tudor City?(Books, 27 April) – helped to establish London as a global financial centre. Yet he left another legacy that is still with us in the form of Gresham College, in Holborn, London, which provides free, top-quality lectures to the public (since 1597).
Available in a vast range of subjects, all lectures are scripted, videoed and?, as well as to those who attend in person. In the turbulent 16th century, Gresham was way ahead of his time in providing free access to education for all to benefit.
