As we begin a new decade, THE data editor Simon Baker asks: has the higher education sector fully recovered from the financial crash of 2008? Looking at data from Unesco, he examines how different countries reacted to the crash.

In the UK, new figures on student enrolment reveal an increasing reliance on Chinese fee income. Is there a reason for this increase and what does this mean for the sector as a whole?

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, data on research publications show a surge in domestic publications and a drop in international collaboration, in what could be an example of a government policy having a direct impact on HE.
