Study in Macao
Built on a peninsula just across the Pearl River from Hong Kong, Macao burns brightly on the shores of the South China Sea.
This former Portuguese colony is known as the “Las Vegas of Asia” but in truth it dwarfs its American counterpart; Macao surpassed Vegas in 2006 to become the world’s largest gambling centre.
Macao became an autonomous territory after the Portuguese handed it back in 1999, the last European colony in Asia to be returned. It is also one of the richest places in the world with an economy based on gambling and tourism as well as boasting one of the highest life expectancies to be found anywhere.
But Macao isn’t all supercasinos and millionaires. This port city has a long and unique history that gives the place a colourful character all of its own. Portuguese and Chinese cultural influences have mixed to create a lively city with a unique food culture, a place perfect for students wishing to take advantage of the international perspective on offer here.
The university of Macau and the Macau Polytechnic Institute offer courses in Chinese, English and some in Portuguese and many other privately-run higher education institutions are based in the city.
