The Bandung Institution of Technology was established in 1920, and was given its current name in 1959. It was one of Indonesia’s first technological universities, and has established a strong reputation among both Indonesian and South Asian institutions.
ITB is primarily based on a large campus in the city of Bandung, in western Java. Bandung is a large, rapidly growing city that has become one of Indonesia’s most important industrial areas over the past 30 years. The city has also become an important centre for higher education in the country, with Bandung playing host to a large number of different universities across a wide range of styles and disciplines.
In-keeping with IT’s technological theme, Bandung is also one of Indonesia’s biggest cities for technology and manufacturing expertise, and many graduates of ITB often find themselves later finding employment with the many companies that call the city home. ITB primarily focuses its academic portfolio on engineering and the sciences, but it does also operate a small cluster of humanities and social science subjects as well.
It’s not just academic offerings in which ITB takes pride, however. The university also provides extensive recreational areas and activities for its students, including sports and dining areas, as well as a dedicated student activity centre providing for a wide range of interests. The city of Bandung itself is a major domestic tourist hub, and is popular with young people for its retail environment and nightlife.
Famous alumni of ITB include businessman and entrepreneur Aburizal Bakrie, and Indonesian President B.J Habibie.
