Slovakia’s largest university is Comenius University in Bratislava.
The university is well known for its research, and has a high number of doctoral students.
In 1919 Comenius University in Bratislava was established as a replacement for the former Elisabeth University. This makes it the oldest university currently operating in Slovakia.
The first university in the country was founded in Bratislava in 1465, and Comenius University prides itself on carrying on the centuries-old tradition of higher education in the city.
The university is named after Jan Amos Comenius, the 17th century Czech philosopher who was among the world’s first advocates of education for all.
Faculties at the university are: Medicine, Law, Philosophy, Natural Sciences, Education, Pharmacy, Physical Education, Medicine, Theology, Management, Social and Economic Sciences and Mathematics, Physics and Informatics.
In 1992, Comenius University became the first institution to take part in the UNESCO Chairs programme. This scheme draws together the expertise of universities around the globe to tackle human rights problems.
There are now more than 700 institutions involved in UNESCO Chairs, of which Comenius University is still an integral part.
Comenius University in Bratislava is highly international, with over 2,000 international students and over 300 bilateral exchange agreements with partner universities.
A significant number of Slovakia’s politicians are alumni of the university, including the prime minister, Robert Fico, and deputy prime minister Miroslav Laj?ák.
Bratislava is a captivating city, with its old town contrasting with stark socialist-era architecture. The vineyard-covered mountains of the Little Carpathians lie to the north.
Comenius University itself sits on the picturesque banks of the river Danube, which passes through the city centre.
