As the only German university outside Germany, the German University in Cairo is a private institution set up in the Egyptian capital of Cairo. It was established in 2002 by a consortium including the Universities of Ulm and Stuttgart, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the state of Baden-Wurttemburg and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
It declares a vision of "building a leading centre of excellence in teaching and research that will effectively contribute to the general welfare nationally and internationally and enable scientific, technical and cultural cooperation between Egypt and Germany".
The language of instruction is English, but German is used to enable student exchanges and internships with German companies. Around one fifth of students have visited Germany in the past five years, many using the university's campus in Berlin and residence in Ulm.
Since 2007, the campus, in the New Cairo district, has incorporated an industrial park accommodating leading German companies and from 2016, there has been a Solar City, showcasing sustainable energy.
The university started with faculties of information engineering and technology, medical engineering and technology, management and technology, engineering and media science and pharmacy and biology. It has subsequently added applied science and arts – offering courses in graphic, media and product design – and most recently it has added courses in law and legal studies.
Scholarship schemes include 54 places offered to applicants from public education in the 27 Egyptian provinces, Nile Basin scholarships awarded by Egypt’s Foreign Ministry, 25 places for high performers in the national secondary school examination and 10 places on master's courses in either engineering or management technology for refugees from Syria.
