The National University of La Plata (UNLP) was established in 1897 in La Plata, capital of the Buenos Aires Province. The university’s motto is “for science and the motherland”. This historic university has undergone many changes since its inception to include 16 different faculties in addition to a physics institute founded in 1905.
The university offers more than 100 different degrees in the fields of architecture and urbanism, arts, agriculture and forestry, astronomy and geophysical sciences, economics, law and social sciences, medical sciences, informatics, engineering, dentistry, psychology, social work, veterinary sciences, humanities and education sciences and more.
UNLP houses several cultural activities to provide students with a full-fledged experience; including a university radio, press and theatre. Other academic research centres and institutions such as the museum of natural sciences, the institute of physical education and the astronomical observatory, to name but a few, are housed within the university campus, which is divided into five main groups, with each housing several faculties.
Just like Argentina, the university itself has undergone a cultural shift to include more "modern" activities to provide students with a preview of the Argentinian culture. This includes a university choir, the first of its kind throughout Argentina, and a string quartet.
The university’s alumni list is impressive, with three presidents namely Raul Alfonsin, Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Fernández de Kirchner. Other notable alumni include noble peace laureates Adolfo Pérez Ezquivel and Carlos Saavedra Lamas as well as several inventors in the field of medicine.
