The Nursing School of Coimbra was established in 2004 through the merging of nursing schools, Bissaya Barreto and Dr Angelo da Fonseca.
There are three campuses that make up the university; Campus A and C are located on the parish of Santo Antonio dos Olivais in Coimbra near to the university hospital. Campus B can be found near the parish of S Martinho do Bispo near the university’s General Hospital and University Centre.
Specialising in nursing education, the school offers undergraduate, master’s and postgraduate degrees in addition to professional training courses. Undergraduate students are taught across eight semesters in a range of theoretical, practical, laboratory and clinical classes, as well as seminars and tutorials in small groups. Undergraduate modules include anatomophysiology, clinical microbiology, and developmental psychology.
Once students have completed their undergraduate and master’s degrees in nursing, they can choose to go on to a postgraduate degree in areas including occupational nursing, wound treatment and mental health first aid.
Students at the school have the opportunity to participate in a range of extracurricular activities and clubs, including Greek club Sigma Theta Tau, which was founded at the school in 2011. Located on Campus C are a range of sporting facilities including a football pitch.
