Satbayev University’s history dates back to 1933 when the Kazakh Mining and Metallurgical Institute was founded. The institute was designed to improve the technical and economic state of Kazakhstan’s national economy. It had only two faculties when it first opened: mining and non-ferrous metals. The institute’s name changed several times throughout the years and only became Satbayev University in 2017.
There are 10 institutions and 30 departments at the university, which offer courses specialising in the fields of mining and oil. Some of the institutes include metallurgy and industrial engineering, cybernetics and information technology, and architecture and construction. Students can study at both undergraduate and graduate level.
In 2014 Satbayev University became a National Research University and has since collaborated with top scientists and researchers around the world. The university boasts its own National Technology Centre - Parassat - and has eight other research institutes. Satbayev University works with large mining metallurgy and oil-gas companies to carry out innovative research projects. The university is committed to the development of "green technology" and the extraction of hydrocarbons from alternative sources.
International collaboration helps the university with its research projects. Satbayev University has developed partnerships with 174 leading higher educational institutions from 25 countries around the world.
The university is located in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city with a population of about two million. The city has a vibrant atmosphere with a variety of shops, markets, restaurants, bars and museums on offer. There are also fantastic mountain hiking and skiing opportunities located nearby.
