Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) is a public research university located in Khairpur, Pakistan. It was established in 1979 and is named after the renowned poet and spiritualist Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.
Situated in a rural area, SALU is affiliated with the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and the Pakistan Bar Council. The campus is commonly referred to as SALU and is adorned with the colours gold, blue, and white. Currently, SALU has around 8,000 students, including approximately 3,500 undergraduates, 1,500 postgraduates, and 500 doctoral students.
SALU is well-known for its commitment to providing quality education in various academic disciplines. Apart from its main campus in Khairpur, SALU has teaching campuses in Shikarpur, Shahdadkot, and Ghotki. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes, making it a prominent institution for higher education in the northern part of Sindh.
SALU's history dates back to its foundation in 1976 when it began as a single campus to meet the growing demand for higher education in Sindh. In 1986, it attained independent university status, covering a sprawling campus area of 291 acres with lush green lawns and playgrounds. Despite having over 4,000 students, with a majority being male, the university provides transportation facilities for its students who often commute daily from their homes.
Research is a central focus at SALU, and the university has established various research entities, including the Directorate of Research, Indus Development Research Centre, and several research chairs. These facilities promote academic research and contribute to the development of the region.
SALU is organised into faculties that encompass a wide array of academic disciplines, including arts, commerce and business administration, law, science, student affairs, education, and physical science. The faculty of law collaborates with affiliated professional law colleges to conduct teaching programmes. SALU also offers bachelor's, master's, and PhD degrees in various fields, contributing to the educational landscape of Sindh.
